MHS participated in the English Speaking Union's National Shakespeare Competition. The goal of this annual event is to encourage a love of the Bard's works, to enhance the development of communication skills, and for students to gain a deeper appreciation for "the power of language and literature."

In 2015, Senior Tina Nguyen won our local event. She went on to compete at the Regional competition in San Francisco.

In 2016, Senior Holly Nguyen won our local event. She, too, went on to compete in SF.

And our winner in 2017 was Senior Amanda Cullen.

Every spring for the past five years, the MHS theatre department has proudly sent students to TheatreWorks Silicon Valley to participate and compete in their annual 1440 Countdown - a 24-hour playwriting experience. On April 17, 2015, we sent three teams to the TheatreWorks Rehearsal Studios in Redwood Shores. There, they spent the next 24 hours creating, writing, revising, and rehearsing an original 10-minute play that they then perform for a panel of judges.

Back in 2015, team Check Your Six took home FIRST PLACE!  Their original play was performed one more time during TheatreWorks's New Plays Festival in August of that year.

In 2018, team Busty Crustaceans took home FIRST PLACE for their original play, OPEN UP. It, too, was performed at TheatreWorks Silicon Valley's New Plays Festival!
